Progressive Revelation

Of the dozen different ways that the Bible or any religious text can be interpreted, one of my favorites for interpretation of the Bible is the PROGRESSIVE approach. Other methods, and they are that, to interpret the Bible are of course literal, metaphorical, historical, midrash, hermeneutically etc. Let me focus on the benefits of the progressive which doesn’t deny the other methods, but simply adds to them.  

People who lived 4,000 years ago were at a much lower state of consciousness than we are today, and so they needed a “Mosaic Law” instruction much like our children. Do this and don’t do that? Then 2,000 years ago Jesus came along when a higher state of consciousness was developed, and he gave us the “Sermon on the Mount” consciousness (spiritual understanding if that helps you).

In addition, Jesus knew that we would progress, so he reminded us that ONE DAY we would have an even greater consciousness level (John 16:12), and more could and would be revealed.

That ONE DAY is NOW!

I am not talking about a literal day, but an era, season, epoch, etc. If Jesus corrected the 4,000 year old thinking (and he did), why would we think it strange that (by the Holy Spirit of course if you’re a Christian) some New Testament thinking wouldn’t be expanded upon or corrected (other than a religious spirit that believes it was all done 2,000 years ago of course).

Jesus didn’t write! Since it’s obvious that he could read and was literate, why did he not write, other than a couple of words in the sand?

My answer is because he didn’t want people falling into the trap of formulating whatever he wrote into some dead doctrine of 2,000 years ago. Moreover, yet we did it anyway. Obviously, the Scriptures allude to such in several places reminding us that it’s not about the LETTER of the LAW, nor the OUTER manifestations, but by the SPIRIT whom would be sent in His physical absence to correct our stinking religious thinking.
