The Peace Of God And The Feast Of Purim

In synagogues around the world, this weekend will recognize the Feast of Purim. The word “Purim” means “lots,” a reference to the casting of lots by Haman as he decided on the day he would eliminate the Israelites from Persia.

The story is found in the Book of Esther and takes place during the reign of Xerxes (486-465 B.C.). Xerxes takes as his new queen the beautiful Esther who is Jewish, unbeknownst to him. Haman is one of the king’s commanders, and he holds a particular disdain for the Jewish people, feeling special hatred for one in particular named Mordecai whose very piety sends Haman into an uncontrollable rage. The commander doesn’t realize that Mordecai is a close family member of Esther when he orders the destruction of the Jews.

Knowing only the king could save them, Mordecai pleads with the reluctant Esther to seek Xerxes help, uttering to her the infamous words, “Who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?” After a number of intriguing turns in the story, Esther receives favor from the king and her people are saved. The evil Haman is killed and the righteous Mordecai is promoted to royalty.

Though for trivia’s sake the Book of Esther is infamous for failing to mention the name of God, in truth the whole history recorded in the book is seen as evidence of divine protection and providence.

In modern day readings of the book during Purim it is common to boo and hiss when evil Haman’s name is recited. Others write his name on the bottom of their shoes, symbolically treading over him as they stomp their feet during the reading. It is also customary to share a blessing or give a toast at the mention of Mordecai and Esther’s names as the story is told. In the end it is a celebration of God’s sheltering presence and deliverance.

It is also common to read Psalm 30, which reads in part:

Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me;

O LORD, be my help.

You turned my wailing into dancing;

you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,

that my heart may sing to you and not be silent.

O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.

Regardless of where you are on your faith journey, the message of Purim is about taking time to stop and remember times where God’s presence has been felt most closely. Whether through contemplation and prayer, or by simply sharing in love, friendship and laughter, the weekend’s focus is to elicit feelings of peace, gratitude and faith. Now those are things we can all celebrate!
